Child’s Lit Final

Artifact 1: Book Resource Guide

Guiding Question: Why is children’s literature so important? How can we use literature to support literacy growth for students?

Standard- Performance

1(b) Creates developmentally appropriate instruction that takes into account individual learners’ strengths, interests, and needs, which enables each learner to advance and accelerate his/her learning.

EDU 381 Book Resource Guide – Molly’s Books (google.com)

Description- The book resource guide was created to show diversity in literature. Diversity in terms of race, language, disabilities, family situations, etc, as well as reading levels for students. This allowed us, students, to level books where we best see fit.

Reflection- I chose this artifact for the performance standard because it was focused on individuality. No two students had a similar guide because each student got to choose books important to them. Additionally, it allowed us to expand our learning by looking at what others choose and seeing the wide variety of books picked. We also got to pick the layout of our page, giving us creative freedom and to express our work in the way we thought it best-made sense. This assignment gave us the freedom we needed to be creative while still having the structure for the main content portion of it. Personally, I chose this artifact because it was one of my favorites. While it was time-consuming I enjoyed it because I had to be picky about what books I wanted to represent me. It was nice having so much control over the final product of my book resource guide page.

Artifact 2: Content Accountability

Guiding Question: What are the five components of reading instruction? How can a teacher support comprehension and meaning-making?

Standard- Learner Development

The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Discussion Board – Reading/Lang/Child Lit:Early – Fall … (une.edu)

Description- Each week a short assignment would get submitted and represent the out of class content. The first half was planned out so we knew the array of options, and in the last half of the semester, we got to choose our own content accountability. This specific one is from week 6.

Reflection- I picked this artifact because it demonstrates growth throughout the semester. There were different mediums to submit for the assignments at the end, giving the student a choice of what works best for them, which I found very appealing. I picked it for this standard because Lane truly understood that we take in information differently and we were given the chance to express that. From drawings, virtual sticky notes, organizers, and pictures it allowed us as students to explore which ones were our strengths and weaknesses. The structured format at the beginning was helpful to have a starting point, but changing it to a choice really helped me see which worked best for the content of the week and my thinking process of it. Being weekly too, kept it in my head without being overwhelming since it was intended to be a quick assignment.
