Project 1: What is Trauma and ACEs

Assignment Description: Synthesize your knowledge from class discussions, powerpoints, and readings about trauma and adverse childhood experiences(ACEs) to create a presentation, paper, video, or other preapproved product. Back up your descriptions, definitions, and opinions with research and references.

Reflection: This assignment has allowed me to take a glance at some of the students/patients I will be working with as a PT. Not every student comes from a supportive family, but despite that, I can provide a safe and nurturing experience for them. Sadly, trauma and ACEs are more prevalent in society than many people would like to admit. With this prevalence though, there are not as many educators or healthcare professionals changing their ways or becoming more knowledgeable or informed about trauma and the effects of trauma and ACEs. I want to change that norm and pass on the information I have learned to my friends, classmates, and future colleagues. As a PT, I want every patient to feel they are in a safe space where there is no limit to how much they can grow or develop. I want patients to feel empowered, loved, and know they have a supportive adult advocating for them.

Connection to Standards: This assignment contributes to some of the individual environmental factors that may affect a student’s ability to learn in the classroom. We as educators or PTs need to be able to address these differences and accommodate the learner because of it. Developmentally, all students come to us in different places. Knowing that not all students are made the same or have the same experiences we need to be able to use differentiation and scaffolding to give each student a more personal approach to learning. By doing this, they will feel safer in the classroom and we can help them succeed.
